Hole Opening, Explained

A pilot hole is drilled first, at a smaller diameter, using a standard DTH hammer and button bit. This can be done cheaply, often for exploration purposes.

The hole opener is then run down the existing pilot hole, guided by the original bore as a pilot path.

As the hole opener advances, it cuts the surrounding formation outward, enlarging the hole to the opener's full diameter.

The result is a clean, true hole at the required final diameter.

Do I need to know my pilot hole size to order?

Yes. Hole openers are matched to the original pilot hole diameter so the opener can follow the existing bore. Tell us your pilot size and target final diameter and we’ll confirm the right configuration.

Which sizes are kept in stock?

8″, 10″ and 12″ (203/254/305 mm) diameters are stocked for fast delivery. Other sizes are available but may carry a longer lead time.
